Work Center Mounts Campaign to Secure its Future
Begins $2 million Capital Campaign

At its Annual Meeting in October 1999, the Fine Arts Work Center authorized a Capital Campaign to raise $2,000,000 to secure the financial future of the Work Center.

Board President Hatty Walker Fitts stated, "Our history has been filled with tough times in years past. However, over the past few years, we've done a fabulous job of pulling together. Now we need to top it off with a successful Capital Campaign to ensure that our legacy of work continues into the future." Co-chairman Michael Mazur agreed, saying, "Only if we acknowledge our responsibilities can we ensure that the wonderful opportunities we provide will continue."

The Capital Campaign is designed to meet its goal by the end of 2001. The funds will be specifically earmarked toward reducing the mortgage balance, increasing the endowment, and repairing the buildings.

"The trick will be raising these funds while at the same time keeping a balanced budget," says Executive Director Hunter O'Hanian. "But given the Board's commitment to the Work Center's future, I'm sure that we will persevere. The Fine Arts Work Center has many friends across the country. They value what we do and seek to support us. I'm sure they will be there for us because they understand the invaluable service this organization provides."

"We've made a lot of progress in the last few years -- everyone has noticed it," says Board Member Marty Davis. "However, it's time for everyone to pull together to make a substantial change in how we are structured. I'm so proud of what we've accomplished -- from the new woodshop and darkroom to no more leaking roofs. But we have to be prepared to do more." Board Member Roger Skillings states, "It astounds me that in just more than thirty years, the Work Center has grown from a germ of an idea to an international organization. Our Winter Fellows are respected around the world and the same is true for the Summer Program."
