Distinguished Writers Participate in Senior Writing Program September brought with it the annual migration of our Senior Writing Fellows, a wonderfully diverse group of three poets and three fiction writers: Tom Filer, Mary Hazzard, Phyllis Koestenbaum, Ed Schorb, Kalamu ya Salaam and Lynne Sharon Schwartz. Former Writing Fellow, fiction writer Ben Brooks, served as coordinator for this year's program. Each writer participated in the Work Center's weekly reading series, a much anticipated aspect of the program. "Participation in the Reading Series gave me a chance to prepare material from the book for future readings and to test it on an audience," fiction writer Mary Hazzard said. Mary, the author of two novels published in the '80s, followed in the tradition of her own daughter, who was a Writing Fellow in the early '90s. "I could have stayed forever," said Lynne Sharon Schwartz. One of the six accomplished writers in the Senior Program this year, Schwartz is the author of several novels, story collections, essays collections and a children's book. Underwritten by the generous support of the Lannan Foundation, the Work Center's Senior Fellowship Program continues to support the growing number of writers over the age of 50.
