FAWC Summer & Fall Program Evaluation Results

Marci Brown, a graduate student at Antioch College in Los Angeles, recently conducted an extensive evaluation of the Fine Arts Work Center's Summer and Fall Programs. Information was collected both through written surveys and a focus group held at FAWC. The survey is a useful tool in helping us to plan our future programs. Some principle observations were:

"Based on the findings of 103 completed surveys and a six-member focus group, it is clear that FAWC staff and the Board of Directors have created a program of which they can be very proud. The summer program is a winning situation for artists, FAWC and the Provincetown community..."

"Respondents find the FAWC workshops very useful in terms of faculty, content, readings, faculty feedback, faculty accessibility and workshop format.... The majority (80%) of respondents would take another workshop with the same faculty."

"The time at FAWC seems to represent a benchmark or turning point for many respondents and the FAWC experience often inspires respondents to focus more on their arts education either in other workshops or through formal avenues such as MFA programs. Many have their work published or exhibited (sometimes work that was created at FAWC). Some respondents reported quitting or changing their jobs so that they can focus more time on their art."

"...Generally, people can't seem to say enough that is positive about FAWC. The written survey responses and focus group participants were enthusiastic and supportive. One canšt help but get a sense that, in addition to feeling supported and validated, Summer Workshop participants are simply grateful: grateful that a place such as FAWC exists; grateful that they have been a part of the experience; grateful that they may come back again."

Our thanks go out to all who participated in the survey, and we will be working to implement suggestions and continue to improve the workshops and experiences that we offer through the Fine Arts Work Centeršs Summer and Fall Programs.
