One-Month
Residency for Cuban Artists Announced
Through the generosity of the Phoenix Charitable Foundation of Boston, Massachusetts, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown is pleased to announce a one-month residency at the Fine Arts Work Center for one Cuban visual artist. The resident will be provided with a private living apartment, work studio of approximately 400 sq. feet and a stipend of $500. In addition, the Foundation will pay for the travel expenses associated with transportation between Havana and Provincetown.
The Fine Arts Work Center, a Massachusetts charitable non-profit organization is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council and many private foundations, corporations and individuals. It was created in 1968 by a group of artists and writers to provide seven-month residencies (October 1- May 1) for emerging artists and writers. Each year, more than 1,200 applications are received from around the world for the twenty positions in the Seven Month Fellowship Program. A complete description of the Work Center and its programs can be found at FAWC.org.
The Work Center is located in the heart of Provincetown Massachusetts, a historic fishing village located on the tip of Cape Cod. Provincetown is the oldest continuously operating arts colony in the United States. The Cape Cod National Seashore surrounds Provincetown, one of the most spectacular National Parks in the United States, devoted exclusively to the preservation of the coastal shoreline, dunes and ecosystem.
In addition to its Seven Month Fellowship Program, the Work Center facilities are made available for shorter-term stays for artists and writers who can use the solitude and community of peers to further their artistic talents. The residency sponsored by the Phoenix Charitable Foundation is for emerging practicing artists presently living in Cuba whose work is sufficiently developed that it appears they would benefit for a one month residency at the Work Center. While in residence, the artist will be provided with an apartment and a studio, along with a $500 stipend to cover living expenses. In addition, the resident will be offered an opportunity to speak publicly about their work and to meet with other artists and writers in the area. The residency will take place from September 2 - 27, 2002.
A jury will be in Cuba from February 25, 2002 to March 1, 2002 to review work by individual artists in their studios or other locations. Interested applicants should contact Hunter O'Hanian, FAWC Executive Director to learn more about the residency or to have their work reviewed.
