The rush and bustle of the summer season in Provincetown calms after Labor Day. The streets and beaches are less crowded, the pace slows, towns-people lose their frantic edge. The crush of classes and events associated with the Summer Workshop Program fades to a pleasant memory, and the Work Center begins to prepare for the arrival of new Fellows in October.
This period of slow-down-and-focus creates a favorable environment for the Fall Workshop Program. The Fall Workshops, offered on six weekends from early October to mid-November, are infused with a concentrated intensity. This past season the faculty included long-time favorites Paul Bowen, Gail Mazur, Michael Burkard, Liz Rosenberg, Melanie Braverman, Richard McCann, Jim Peters, Joel Janowitz, Olga Broumas, Martha Rhodes, Mark Wunderlich, and Paul Lisicky. Peter Madden and Marian Roth both diverged from their usual course offerings to try something new; Peter Madden's students explored image transfer and emulsion lifts, while Marian Roth led her students on a photo-shooting expedition around Provincetown, teaching the pleasures and possibilities of street photography. New to the Work Center's faculty roster, Elinor Lipman and David Gates both taught successful fiction workshops.
In conjunction with the workshops, a full schedule of readings and slide talks by faculty
members filled the Stanley Kunitz Common Room each Saturday night.
FAWC Fall Workshops are offered in partnership with Campus Provincetown, a consortium of non-profit educational groups working to augment Provincetown's off-season economy, including the Center for Coastal Studies, Provincetown International Art Institute/Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Provincetown Theatre Company/Narrow Land Arts, and Cape Cod Community College.
