From the Former Fellows

"It's not so much the time in the studio that I look back on and think how great that was (it was great), but the freedom to wake up each day and decide what to do and not to do. I achieved a necessary slowing down of time and a clarity of issues in my work that was essential for my production as an artist. The community that formed at FAWC continues to be my community, its strength forged through the hard times and the celebrations."

Lee Boroson Visual Arts Fellow 1992–1993

"My fellowship at the Work Center remains in my mind as the time when I 'grew up' in my studio. Without the shepherding of teachers, but with the support of other artists, I was able to begin the metamorphosis from student to professional artist. The solitude and beauty of the setting, coupled with the finest of company, made this experience valuable beyond measure."

Kirsten Hassenfeld Visual Arts Fellow 1998–1999

"For me, winter in Provincetown was a monastic dare I ardently accepted, the burden to create magically lifted by the awareness other like-minded folk were in close proximity, coming to terms, working out their own moral and formal questions. I developed an acute kinship and a nutritious empathy for my peers: fiction writers, installation artists, painters and poets among us. Since departing the Fine Arts Work Center, whenever the wintry look of my journal page becomes too much to bear, I imagine them back in their respective hometowns, at their desks, in their studios and galleries, performing the simple act of creating. Then my pen begins its long, arduous trek across the page."

Major Jackson Writing Fellow 2000–2001

"The best part of my time at FAWC was the exposure to serious writers and artists, and from them I got some insight into the lifestyle, from which I learned that it was possible to live with this curse, to keep it from getting the best of me. Because of the uninterrupted time, I was able to patiently revise and stay disciplined, and while living on the second floor of the Barn, I sold my first piece of fiction, to the New Yorker, and that really sent me on my way."

Matt Klam Writing Fellow 1992–1993

Former Fellows News The Former Fellows News shares the latest information on current projects, activities and accomplishments of the Fine Arts Work Center’s many former Visual Arts and Creative Writing Fellows.

The newsletter is printed annually, usually in the fall, and incorporates information sent to the Work Center by former Fellows. It is also now posted on our website, FAWC.org, in the Winter Fellowship section. If you would like a copy mailed to you, let the Work Center office know. We’d be happy to send one out to you.

To the former Fellows: Please send any information you’d like us to print to Dorothy Antczak (dantczak@fawc.org).
We’d love to know where you are, what you’ve been up to, and what good news we can share.
