FAWC Named Program Partner at Highlands Center
The Fine Arts Work Center was named one of the initial Program Partners at the Highlands Center at the Cape Cod National Seashore, part of a proposal by the Federal government to create a campus of buildings where artists and
scientists can work on the site of a former Air Force Base in North Truro, Massachusetts. The site comprises over 110 acres, and contains 57 buildings that were abandoned by the Air Force in the 1980’s. The land and buildings were transferred to the National Park Service, in particular the Cape Cod National Seashore, for re-development. Once the National Seashore received the land they developed the idea of using the buildings in a way that would be appropriate to the Outer Cape by creating a campus of artists and scientists working side-by-side in a supportive environment. They used the Presidio in San Francisco as a model for the program. The Work Center’s proposal was selected along with submissions by the Center for Coastal Studies, Barnstable County’s AmeriCorps, and the Payomet Theatre.
The Work Center proposed creating a new program at the Highlands Center, which would convert one of the barracks buildings into a studio building for artists and writers living on the Outer Cape. The building would hold 20 studios of approximately 200 sq. feet each. User fees would be
approximately $360 per month. The studio program falls within FAWC’s mission to help the artist community in Provincetown by working to provide additional studio space for artists and writers. Affordable studio space is a major problem for those who choose to live on the Cape.
The development of this program is subject to successful lease negotiations with the National Park Service and approval by the FAWC Board of Trustees.
