TDBanknorth Awards Grant
to Fine Arts Work Center
for Exterior Disability Lift

(October 3, 2005, Provincetown, MA)
TDBanknorth Charitable Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown to fund the installation of an exterior disability lift. Once installed, the new lift will make all 7 living units and 8 studios/class rooms on the second floor of the Days Lumberyard, Trapshed and Stanley Kunitz Common Room buildings accessible to all, including disabled Fellows, students, visitors and senior citizens. The need was stimulated by the recent completion of the first stage of FAWC’s current reconstruction project that created a new two-story building that connected its two main buildings.

Larry Squire, Co-Regional President of TDBanknorth's Cape Cod Region said "TDBanknorth recognizes the importance of this elevator to provide access for artists who may have physical challenges as well as all who wish to visit the artists' studios and may not be able to traverse steep wooden staircases." FAWC Executive Director, Hunter O'Hanian expressed that "the Fine Arts Work Center is very grateful for TDBanknorth's great support in providing accessibility to all program participants and their guests. These funds will help FAWC insure that our mission to enhance the cultural life of the Outer Cape, as well as promote economic development through the arts, is all-inclusive."

For more than 35 years, FAWC has been a vital part of the cultural and economic life of the Cape and is a leader in the nation's artist communities. Each year, the Work Center brings twenty emerging artists and writers to Provincetown for seven months, the nation's longest unencumbered residential fellowship. While the Fellowship Program is the core of FAWC's mission, it offers other programs including the Summer and Fall Workshops in visual arts and creative writing as well as more than eighty public literary reading and visual arts lecture series, the largest on Cape Cod. In September 2005, it started an innovative new MFA program in visual arts in collaboration with the Massachusetts College of Art.

All of these programs are made stronger through the addition of readily accessible buildings.

The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Inc. is a Massachusetts charitable corporation, exempt from taxation under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. In addition to a modest endowment and revenue producing, mission related programs, its $1,000,000 annual budget is supported by governmental agencies such as the National Endowment for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Ohio State Arts Council, Barnstable County Economic Development Commission and the Town of Provincetown. In addition, numerous private foundations and individuals support the Work Center. Applications for the Winter Fellowship Program can be downloaded from the FAWC website.
