   FELLOWS IN THE NEWS
  The people who are the Work Center's history – our former Fellows – have emerged to become accomplished writers and artists. Here are some of the highlights of their achievements during 2008. Space limits the following to selected awards, books and exhibits. We extend our congratulations to these Fellows and to all Fellows whose work gives us our reason for being. Our 2008 annual report will include a complete list of our Fellows' 2008 accomplishments.

Writing Fellows: Selected Awards 2008

Louise Glück (1969-70) Won the Academy of American Poets' Wallace Stevens Award of $100,000 for "outstanding and proven mastery in the art of poetry."

Tom Sleigh (1979-80, 1981-82) Won the Kingsley Tufts Award of $100,000 for a poet in mid-career.

Michael Cunningham (1980-81) Received the Fairfax Prize, which honors a body of work that has made "significant contributions to American and international culture" by an author "whose personal efforts have helped the wider community of writers, particularly younger writers."

Robin Hemley (1985-86) Won a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Tony Hoagland (1985-86) Won the Jackson Prize of $50,000, which honors an American poet of exceptional talent who has not yet received major national acclaim.

Matt Klam (1992-93) Won a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Frances Hwang (2002-03) Won the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction for her collection of stories, Transparency.

Salvatore Scibona (2001-02, 2002-03) The End, a novel that is a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award in fiction

Jim Peters (1982-83, 1983-84) Won a Massachusetts Cultural Council Artists Painting Fellowship.

Quentin Walter (1985-86) Won an Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Individual Support Grant.

Mala Iqbal (1998-99, 1999-2000) Won a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.

Carrie Scanga (2005-06) Won a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.
