Reconstruction of the historic Days Lumberyard Building, which houses FAWC's program and administrative offices, is now underway. Three years of fundraising for the project brought us to this point. Construction started in late September and is scheduled for completion by the end of March. Our contractor is Cape Associates, a local firm with a stellar reputation.
The renovation involves demolition of the first floor of the building, construction of a new foundation, and rebuilding of a new first floor, all the while bracing and preserving the historic second floor studios. The building was constructed over 100 years ago for lumber storage on the first floor and artists' studios on the second. After the renovation the first floor will be more appropriate for its current use, and in compliance with modern building codes.
We are most grateful for the hundreds of thousands of dollars contributed to this effort by our donors, and for financing provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, together with Seamen's Bank. Total project costs are $1.3 million.
We will celebrate the grand reopening of the Days Lumberyard Building next spring and summer. Stay tuned for announcement of the special events we'll be hosting!
