THE FINE ARTS WORK CENTER CELEBRATES IT'S 40TH YEAR

As the adventure in hopefulness its founders conceived it to be, 2007 set the stage. In July we welcomed the arrival of our new Executive Director, Margaret Murphy. In August we had our most successful summer auction ever. In September we received a $205,000 matching grant from the new Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund for renovation of our historic Days Lumberyard Building - just the boost we needed to complete the last phase of our Building for the Future reconstruction project. October saw the arrival, for the 40th year in a row, of a new class of emerging artists and writers selected to be our 2007-08 Fellows in Residence – the very reason for our existence. In November we hosted an awards benefit in Cambridge to honor Norman Mailer, Michael Mazur, and Ted Landsmark, three legends-in-our-time devoted to the cultivation of emerging artists and writers. December saw our successful completion of a major Challenge Grant from a very generous supporter, resulting in the addition of $250,000 to our endowment.

2008 will bring many wonderful occasions commemorating our 40th anniversary, including readings by Former Fellows at a national writers conference in New York City; media and events sponsorship by WCAI, the Cape and Islands’ NPR radio station; an exhibit of Former Fellows work at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis; a 40th anniversary luncheon celebrating the place of the Fine Arts Work Center in the history of 20th century American arts and letters, at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City; and a 40th Anniversary Fine Arts Auction at Skinner’s in Boston. Please join us in celebrating this important milestone.
