WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

In general, courses in the Fine Arts Work Center's Summer Program follow the group workshop method (instructor-led discussion and critique). Different instructors have different approaches; please read each course description carefully.

Each workshop will typically offer participants the following:

  • the opportunity to work closely with an established writer or artist
  • constructive feedback from a group of peers
  • an intensive week dedicated to creative work

Some courses are exercise-based, and will focus primarily on generating and critiquing new material. Other courses are revision-based, and are designed to help students improve their existing work. Faculty will lead in-class discussions, offer constructive critiques of student work, and/or suggest suitable exercises.

WRITERS
Writing workshops are limited to a maximum of ten participants. Writing students will have 24-hour access to Macintosh and PC computers and printers in our writing studio as well as copying facilities. Unless otherwise noted, please bring 10 copies of your work with you. DSL Internet access is also available in the writing studio. If you bring a laptop, please remember to bring discs or memory sticks; our printers are on a closed system and cannot be used with plug-ins. Writing lab closes at 5pm on Friday; please plan accordingly.

VISUAL ARTS
Visual Arts workshops are limited to a maximum of ten participants. Visual artists will have 24-hour access to their classrooms/studios. All material costs are the students' responsibility unless otherwise noted in the individual course description. Please note that art supplies are difficult to obtain in Provincetown. Studios/printshop/photo lab close at 4:30pm on Friday; please plan accordingly.

HOW TO CHOOSE A WORKSHOP

  • Please read the individual course descriptions carefully for workshop structure and content. Many course descriptions contain important information about which books or materials to bring with you to Provincetown.
  • Unless otherwise stated, workshops are open-enrollment; most descriptions suggest the level of the class.
  • Many classes fill quickly; for best results please register as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please call (508) 487-9960, ext.103. For residency information see Accommodations.
